It’s no secret that meteorologists and weather enthusiasts alike develop a habit for checking where a weather pattern will be most significant during the week. With this in mind, many view the Storm Prediction Center as a hub for highlighting impactful weather potential in areas of the Continental United States (CONUS). The foundation for any weather forecast depends on a general understanding of the when, where, and what for a particular area. Because without those key ingredients, understanding the “how will this impact me?” is lost. So, if you find yourself wondering how to utilize some resources within the SPC, then you are in the right place.
For the purpose of simplicity, let’s dive into the convective outlook. After all, severe weather season is pretty much upon us!

At first glance, these images immediately grab the reader to pay attention to the southeastern states. Let’s take a closer look.

Scrolling over each tab provides a percentage risk of tornadoes, high winds, and large hail within 25 miles of a point. It is important to note that percentage risk does not translate to it’s going to happen for sure. It is more to highlight where the greater potential will occur within the CONUS. Typically, good rule of thumb is to monitor how this risk changes over the course of future updates and to utilize the discussions with additional information on the weather pattern.
The SPC will offer an in-depth look at Days 1-3. In addition, an outlook of days 4-8 provides a “look-ahead” element which can often flag a “hey this might be something to watch for soon”.
With this foundation, anyone can gain understanding where and when weather may be most impactful during the week. Though it’s helpful for creating the foundation of a forecast, it can also visually provide to any weather curious reader what to look for in the coming days and offer additional insight beyond the occasional glance at a seven-day forecast.
